On July 1 2009, Interior Minister Mihail Mikov opened a new forensic laboratory for DNA analysis in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Bourgas.

The laboratory is the second of its kind in the country. Funding, said to top one million leva, was supplied by the Interior Ministry under the Schengen national action plan. Additional funding came from donations from six seaside municipalities as well as individuals and companies, a government media statement said.

The new laboratory was to serve Bourgas, Haskovo, Kardzhali, Shumen, Sliven, Stara Zagora, Yambol and Varna.

Forensic laboratories currently operating in the Bourgas region would be relocated to the same building as the DNA lab, the media statement said.

The new laboratory was comparable  to, and its test results compatible with, the currently operating DNA laboratory of the National Institute of Criminology, making it possible to build a common database of DNA profiles of individuals and biological traces taken at crime scenes, the media statement said.

The installation at the new laboratory would be able to carry out 500 examinations a year with the possibility of expansion to allow for a doubling of capacity.
