Former deputy interior minister re-appointed
Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) re-appointed former Deputy Interior Minister Roumen Andreev to his former position of deputy director of the National Investigation Service (NIS), Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said.
Andreev was fired only weeks earlier after he had reportedly attended a public birthday party in one of Sofia's most luxurious restaurants on a day of national mourning.
On May 29, the day Bulgaria was mourning the 17 victims of the May 28 hellish road accident near the town of Yambol, Andreev and other prominent Bulgarians, including senior police officials, football star Hristo Stoichkov and Serbian pop-folk singer Miroslav Ilic, attended the 50th birthday party of Ventsislav Rangelov, a high-ranking official at the Sofia police directorate.
Later, Rangelov said the party was a fundraiser, in which 17 000 leva had been collected for the children of policemen who had fallen in the line of duty.
An assessment commitee had adviced the SJC not to grant Andreev's request to be re-appointed to his former position, Dnevnik said.
The committee's advice was overturned by 16 votes to 1.
According to Tsoni Tsonev, head of the ethics commitee of the SJC, an administrative mistake had been made when Andreev left the NIS to take up his position as deputy minister. At the time, Andreev was said to have handed in his resignation, instead of requesting temporary leave.
