Real Madrid move in on Cristiano Ronaldo, Berbatov to stay put
Real Madrid's new galacticos era is in full swing. Only days after secured the services of Kaka from AC Milan, the Queen of Europe has reportedly renewed its interest for Manchester United star winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
Their desire to sign the Portuguese player has apparently prompted real to bid a record 75 million pounds sterling, according to reports in British media.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who just forked out 65 million euro for Kaka, is not discouraged by United's reluctance to sell their star asset, instead he has upped the stakes, adamant that Ronaldo should land at Bernabeu at the beginning of the new season.
Reportedly, "Perez has been encouraged by Ronaldo's representatives, who are intent on making the deal happen, and said he planned to speak to his counterpart at Old Trafford, David Gill, as well as the United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson," British daily The Guardian reported.
Perez has played down talk that Liverpool's Xabi Alonso was a potential target for Real Madrid. "He is a great player but he also plays in a big team and I haven't heard any news that they [Liverpool] plan to sell him."
Those exact words could be said for Ronaldo as well, but that has not stopped Real Madrid from making constant advances over the past two seasons.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have not officially confirmed of any recent attempts to lure the player away from Old Trafford. There was, however, an official statement on the club's website regarding Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov and Nemanja Vicic.
"Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov and Nemanja Vidic will NOT be leaving during the summer," the statement said.
Berbatov’s agent Emil Danchev said that the Bulgarian will also be a United player next season. "Despite speculation that he may leave, I want to declare that Dimitar will play for Manchester United next season. There is no desire from the management for any separation. He will stay and we hope he will win what he missed out on this year."
However, transfer twitter about Berbatov's whereabouts next year were notable with their absence prior to Danchev's statement, which prompted some pundits to speculate that the agent was looking to get an improved contract for the Bulgarian striker.
