Maria Reho and the museum
Maria Reho was born in Pulia, Italy, and is one of the world’s top archaeologists specialising in Greek pottery art, with wide-ranging interests in art history and Thracian-Greek culture.
Reho has been living in Sofia since 1981, working simultaneously for the Archaeology Institute and Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, as well as the St Kliment Ohridski University.
The author of numerous works on archaeology, published both in Italy and Bulgaria, the curator of national and international exhibitions, she has dedicated the best years of her life to the "restoration" of the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia, including the ancient history section of the museum, which offers Bulgarian and foreign visitors a comprehensive and comprehensible look at Bulgaria’s rich history.
Her enthusiasm and dedication were decisive in securing financing to restore the museum’s building in the 1990s, which has returned the archaeology museum to its place of honour in the cultural life of Sofia and Bulgaria.
