Torres signs improved Liverpool contract
Spion Kop's talismanic striker Fernando Torres has put pen to paper pledging his allegiance to Liverpool until 2014. The improved contract includes an option for another season, Liverpool's official website said May 28.
The 25-year-old Spaniard has been a tremendous success since his move from Atletico Madrid two years ago and a huge favourite with the Liverpool supporters. In spite of a season marred by injuries that did not see him reach his full potential, Torres netted his 50th goal for the Reds against Tottenham in the final match of the season.
Torres has joined the ranks of Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Steven Gerrard, who have all signed new contracts over the past two months.
Benitez was quited as saying by the Liverpool website: "We've made huge progress this season and now we need to take the next step. We are building something special here and securing such important players on long-term deals means we can move forward with confidence.
"Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better. Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club."
The question remains, will Benitez manage to secure a prolific back-up striker in the summer transfer window, before the new season begins, to build up on the promise of this season and mount another title challenge.
