WINTER OLYMPICS TO COST BULGARIA 1.3 BILLION EURO
01:00 Wed 14 Dec 2005

If Sofia hosts the Winter Olympics in 2014, at least 1.322 billion euro will be needed to carry out the project. The situation is only theoretical as no documents have been submitted yet. The deadline is January 2006. Seven countries will participate, among them Spain, Austria, Russia, South Korea, Georgia and Kazakhstan, Dnevnik newspaper reported.
If Sofia does not get rejected during the first selection round, the construction of sport facilities will begin. At the same stage the state accepts the condition to cover and eventual deficit, though all Olympic games until now have produced a profit. The national budget also has to provide between $5 million and $10 million for an advertising campaign during the two selection rounds. If Sofia is selected as the host of the games, the full-scale project will be implemented. An amount of 1.322 billion euro will be used for building Olympic infrastructure in Sofia, Samokov and Bansko, the three venues in which the Games will be held.
