VILLAGES IN BULGARIA WITHOUT WATER SUPPLY AND ELECTRICITY
09:00 Wed 15 Mar 2006

After the latest rain and snowfalls in Bulgaria 122 villages lack electricity and 10 do not have regular water supply.

All airports and railway stations work normally, Dnevnik newspaper reported.

The dike of Maritsa River near Vinitsa village is broken, which led to the flooding of agriculture plots. The water level of the river is starting to decrease.

Water is released from several dams to lower the level and prevent an overflow. The Kurdjali disaster prevention committee said a second release valve of the Kurdjali dam was opened yesterday.

The Kurdjali region also experienced an earthquake of magnitude 3.8 on the Richter scale yesterday morning. One strong tremor occurred, followed by two lighter ones.

A second seismic wave followed 20 minutes later. Its magnitude did not exceed 3.3 on the Richter scale.

The epicentre is located close to the one of the earthquakes that took place on February 20. It is close to the Mourgovo and Gorna Krepost villages. Civil Defence teams said no casualties occurred.
