Video surveillance would be installed before the end of 2007 in the three pedestrian streets in Sofia, Graf Igantiev, Vitosha and Pirotska.

This was announced by deputy mayor Velizar Stoilov, zagrada.bg reported.

The camera's would work day and night and would be connected to the centre for video surveillance of the municipal police department, he said.

This way police would follow disturbances of public order and cars driving across the pedestrian zones. At a later stage the system would also be used for traffic control, after a municipal agency was set up for this, Stoilov said.

Sofia's video surveillance installation was funded from the municipal budget and European funds, he added.

why not have few of the many policemen watch the pedestrian zones instead of making the people feel even more watched as they already are? why not fine the people misusing the streets with big fines so they will never do it again, this way money will come in instead of spending a lot on a system that in the future will not work or will be removed.

My experiences while living in Sofia in 2005/2006 were, that the police isn't really interested in punishing cars violating the rules. It happens so often that cars block tram tracks or pedestriant's sidewalks, while policemen stand bored a few metres away. Tratoarite sa za peshehoditsi!
