US CONTENT WITH JUSTICE REFORMS IN BULGARIA- BEYRLE
13:25 Fri 17 Nov 2006

The processes within Bulgaria's justice sector affected American companies and US citizens interested in the country, US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle said.

Beyrle attended the opening of the First National Magistrates Conference on November 17.

For the first time politicians and magistrates were going to meet in such an organised event to discuss developments, said Beyrle.

US followed closely the execution of judicial reforms in Bulgaria just like the EU did, Beyrle said. “We have cheered your successes, and shared your frustration with the enormous challenges you face,” said Beyrle.

These reforms directly affected US citizens working in the country and businesses willing to invest in Bulgaria, said he.

Over the past year a number of developments occurred, said Beyrle. The appointment of Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev triggered positive changes.

“I have seen examples of the political will necessary to fight organised crime and public corruption.  But I think everyone ... would agree that, while the steps I have just described are critical actions in the fight against  crime and corruption, there is still a long way to go,” said Beyrle.
