The unilateral proclamation of independence of Kosovo would be in no one’s interest, Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin said to the ambassadors of the EU member states to Bulgaria.
The meeting was an initiative of the Portuguese ambassador Mario Jesus dos Santos, whose country holds the EU presidency, Bulgarian news agency said.
Kalfin said that he hoped Kosovo would not proclaim independence right after December 10 2007, if it disagrees with the decision of the international mediators, who have to present their report on the negotiations between Kosovo, Serbia and UN on the future of Kosovo.
Certain processes would have to take place after the report was announced, Kalfin said. If Serbia and Kosovo could not negotiate anymore, the international community and Kosovo had to do so. Only after the negotiations would come to a result, independence could be proclaimed.
At the ambassador's meeting it was pointed out that the EU would have to look for the maximum possible agreement between member states in any development of the Kosovo situation and that Kosovo should not be allowed to destabilise the whole region.
