UNEMPLOYMENT IN BULGARIA AT 6.7 PER CENT IN OCTOBER 2007

The trend of decreasing unemployment continued in October, but was significantly smaller that the previous months, National Employment Agency announced on November 21.

Unemployment in the country was 6.73 per cent, compared to the 8.38 per cent in October 2006. The unemployment rate in October 2007 was the lowest for the month of October since 1991.

In October 2007, the number of unemployed, registered in Labour Offices decreased by 1715 to 249 376 people. On an annual basis, the decrease was 60 993, investor.bg said.

The increased number of newly registered unemployed was the result of the end of the season in a number of sectors combined with the end of various employment programmes.

Unemployment decreased in 24 regions in Bulgaria, most significantly in Lovech, Montana, Silistra, Kurdjali and Pazardjik. Unemployment increased in the other four regions, mostly in Varna and Dobrich where seasonal work prevailed.

Labour Offices registered 16 172 work places, which was a decrease of 2047 or 11.2 per cent compared to September 2007.
