
Bulgaria launched a road safety campaign to demonstrate its support for UN’s Global Road Safety Week.
The initiative that will be carried out under the slogan I Save Life received the support of Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev.
UN’s Global Road Safety Week will take place from April 23 to 29. Statistics show that nearly 1.2 million people day in traffic accidents worldwide each year.
In Bulgaria, 1043 people died in traffic accidents in 2006. More than 10 000 people were gravely injured.
Interior Minister Roumen Petkov also presented statistics on traffic accidents in Bulgaria. In the first quarter of 2007 Bulgaria witnessed 1673 traffic accidents that caused the death of 208 people. The figure is 40 per cent higher than the data for the first three months of 2006.
Stanishev expressed Bulgaria’s support for the European road safety charter. Its main aim will be to decrease the number of traffic accident victims by 2010. The project targets to save 25 000 lives.
