The measures undertaken to limit worker migration from Bulgaria and Romania, once the two countries joined the EU were seen as 'cosmetic posturing', the Daily Telegraph reported.
Secretary of state for the home office John Reid would present this week the measures aimed at limiting the migration wave.
Daily Telegraph said that the previously accepted open door policy would probably be abandoned. A number of officials already said that they were concerned worker migration could lead to social problems and could take away the jobs of local labourers.
Nearly 600 000 Polish and other East European workers travelled to the UK after the previous enlargement in 2004.
The report said that some workers would be allowed to enter the country but strict limits would be imposed.
A migration advisory committee would monitor the number of foreigners in the country and would report which sectors are in need of additional labour hand, Daily Telegraph reported.
Conservative home affairs spokesperson Damian Green said that Britain needed stricter migration control measures, as in other EU member states. Such measures could ensure that “ [Britain] only take[s] in the people who will benefit [the] economy".
