UK EXTENDS RESTRICTIONS ON BULGARIAN AND ROMANIAN WORKERS
17:05 Tue 30 Oct 2007

UK decided to extend the restrictions on Bulgarian and Romanian workers at least until the end of 2008.

The restrictions were imposed in January 2007 when Bulgaria and Romania entered the EU. The restrictive measures changed the open-door policy adopted towards the countries, which entered the EU in 2004.

Immigration minister Liam Byrne said “two weeks ago, I said we needed to strike a new balance in Britain's immigration policy - where we listen to independent advice on the benefits to the economy and on the wider impacts we know migration has. Today, the right balance points to continuing to restrict access to the labour market for those low-skilled migrants coming from Romania and Bulgaria until at least the end of 2008.”

While initial evidence shows that there is a clear positive contribution to the economy from migration, there are some reports of pressures in other areas, including public services. A prudent balance is therefore to maintain restrictions as we monitor the medium to long-term effects of accession migration, a press release from the UK Embassy to Bulgaria quoted Byrne as saying in parliament.

As a result, the low-skilled Bulgarian and Romanian workers can work in Britain under a quota system in UK’s food processing and agriculture industries. From 2008, applications to the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme will be accepted only from Romania and Bulgaria.

Skilled migrants can be hired only if residents cannot fill the job place.

Todor! Not all English agree with our government. My wife and three step children are Bulgarian and I am appalled at the double standards our Labour government apply to two smaller nations joining the EU. I hope eventually to retire and live with my wife back in Bulgaria, and quite honestly I do not think I will miss that much of England now it has become a Scottish run enterprise. I understand your anger, and would not be surprised if some significant reprisals were put in place, such as ban all people from countries who have immigration barriers from buying Bulgarian/Romanian properties, or perhaps implementing a "foreign ownership" tax on such properties. I am as disappointed as most of your countrymen and women

Peter, Pardon me for my emotional outburst! I didn't mean to generalize the issue pls, from your response it's crystal clear that you are one of those few brits who are not racist or myhopic minded....My anger is mainly against the racist brit media who have been campaigning vigorously before BG and RM joined the EU 2007..poisoning many brits minds.. it's a shame i used to respect Britian for its tolerance and multiculturalism but now, i would rather remain poor in my country than going to UK even if the restriction is finally lifted the partiallity had been done,it's unfair...Am sure if it is terrorists the Home Office would allow them free passage into Britian... Your opinion is remarkable Peter.. Cheers

These restrictions on migrations, though only temporary, are actually a blessing in disguise. If the UK (and the other EU countries and the US) were to grant Bulgarians unlimited access to their labour markets...why there would be no Bulgarians left in Bulgaria.

Harold, there's no problem at all. We Bulgarians are very proud and dignified people..let the racist Brits keep, live and die with their shut door...What goes around will surely come around mark mt word...My problem is, this is nothing but pure politics, naked racism, partiallity, arrogance, marginalization etc...The Uk Home Office and those imbecile decision makers are the biggest bunch of Hypocrites ever!...Let them keep issuing visas, refugee status, shielding and spending innocent tax payers hard earned pounds sterlings on Osama Bin Laden offsprings and terrorists alike in Britian...Blind arrogant set of Pigs
