The UK delegation to NATO's Parliamentary Assembly supported entirely Bulgaria's cause to liberate five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya, delegation head Bruce George said.
George sent a letter to his Bulgarian counterpart Nikolai Kamov, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.
Evidence showed that the infection occurred before the arrival of the Bulgarians to Libya, George said. It also showed that the infection resulted from poor hygiene in the hospital, he said.
UK delegation and George himself supported the stand of NATO PA's President Bert Koenders that the refusal of Libyan court to count scientific reports as evidence was hard to understand, the letter said.
George said that he visited Libya in 2004 as representative of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). He discussed the case with Libya's authorities and the confirmation of the verdicts in 2006 disappointed him.
UK delegation intended to ask UK secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs Margaret Beckett to insist before Libyan authorities to take into consideration scientific evidence in the case of the nurses.
