UK's biggest business leaders had called on the government to allow “unlimited immigration” from Bulgaria and Romania, after the two countries' expected EU entry in January 2007, the online version of The Independent reported.
Recently a lot of British public figures had expressed their concerns that the potential migrant workers wave from Bulgaria and Romania would worsen the labour market situation.
A huge migrant workers wave from Eastern Europe had already entered the UK labour marker after the previous EU enlargement in 2004, causing higher levels of unemployment among the local youngsters.
According to the UK business leaders, any break in the open door policy would be a “major mistake”, The Independent said.
Business leaders had already signed a statement, issued by the Business for New Europe Group (BNEG). "A so-called pause in migration from these countries would be tantamount to a reversal of policy and could work against Britain's interests", the statement said.
"The simple fact is that workers from other European countries come to the UK because there are jobs”, according to the business leaders.
