Even though the national strike committee had announced the official end of the strike on November 2, two schools in Bulgaria's coastal city of Varna were still on strike on November 6.
The teachers decided to continue protesting, because they were unsatisfied with the Cabinet’s proposal for salary increases, Focus news agency said.
Teachers of the two Varna schools also felt deserted by the unions.
In one of the two protesting schools, Kolio Ficheto professional high school, 40 out of 41 teacher handed in their letter of resignation on October 24 2007. The main reason for the resignations was the offence, the humiliation and the lack of understanding by Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, Education Minister Daniel Vulchev and Finance Minister Plamen Oresharski.
On November 6 2007, union KT Podkrepa representative Stoiko Atanasov said that union demanded that the resignations would be withdrawn.
The disrespectful attitude of the authorities towards Bulgaria’s education could provoke a new strike, Atanasov also said.
