Two feature films from Bulgaria, The Rebel of L and Warden of the Dead, were included in the Focus on World Cinema section of the Montreal World Film Festival.
The Rebel of L’s scenario is about a high-school graduate in 1986, who tries to escape to the West, but is betrayed, captured and charged with political motivation. The years in prison make him alienated and indifferent to the world. Once he is granted amnesty, he starts his revenge.
Some of Bulgaria’s most prominent actors, like Samuel Fintzi, Itzhak Finzi and Nikolai Urumov, take part in Warden of the Dead. The famous piper Teodosii Spasov is author of the sound track of the film. The film tells the story of a boy who works at a cemetery and the cemetery is his whole life. The boy takes care of his strange friends, an unhappy old man, a former political prisoner, a deceased makeup artist and a former artist.
Aleksander Grozev, National Film Centre executive director, said that these are the first Bulgarian productions to take part in the prestigious film fest in Canada over the past years.
Both films will be screened together with films from the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Sweden, a Culture Ministry press release said.
The festival will be held from August 23 to September 3 2007.
