The municipal councilors of Tsarevo municipality restated their readiness to litigate the legitimacy of the order of Environment and Water Affairs Minister Djevdet Chakurov for the foundation of Strandzha natural park.
The lack of an official stand by the municipal council, and the fact that Chakurov’s order fails to specify the borders and area of the park, were among the grounds of the declaration, Focus news agency reported.
According to the councilors, this extreme step was made to defend their commitment to the interests of the municipality.
Strandzha Mountain was pronounced a preserve area in 1995, but the authorities failed to specify the borders of the park. In the end of June 2007, Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) decided that Strandzha Mountain could not be pronounced preserved area because of administrative omissions and violations in it was declared a national park in 1995.
SAC also abolished Chakurov’s order for the establishment of a natural park in Strandzha.
The Environment and Water Affairs Ministry then appealed against SAC’s decision, and the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor's Office launched cancellation of SAC’s decision.
The municipal administration and council in Tsarevo emphasise that they will not allow the destruction of nature in Stranzha park and along the Black Sea coast.
Still, the administration believes that environmental preservation should not turn into end in itself if it does not serve the needs of the population.
