The trial of the Bulgarian nurses charged with deliberate HIV infection in Libya “flaunted disrespect for human rights in every respect,“ World Politics Watch said.
Libya accused five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor of intentional HIV infection of more than 400 children in the town of Benghazi as part of CIA and Israeli conspiracy, World Politics Watch said.
The court is expected to pronounce the final verdicts on December 19.
On May 6 2004 the medics were sentenced to death by firing squad while nine Libyan medics accused of the same crime were acquitted.
Lwyers Without Borders representative Emmanuel Altit said that the defence 'expressed emphaty' with the victims but their sufferings failed to excuse “the false charges against six medical workers whose only crime is that they are foreigners.” The trial so far was unfair, he said.
Diplomats refrained from involvement in the trial because of geopolitical and economic interests, World Politics Watch said.
Scientists, human rights organisations and lawyers mainly stood up for the medics. As the trial outcome comes closer after a nearly a decade „pleas for justice are pouring in from around the globe,” the report said.
