Transport restructured for EU membership
14:00 Thu 25 Oct 2001

As of the beginning of 2002, the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) will be split into a National Railway Infrastructure Company and a National Railway Carriage Company. This restructuring plan is based on the EU requirements for railway carriage, railway carriage licensing and railway development strategy, said parliamentary transport and telecommunications committee chairman Yordan Mirchev at a regular meeting of the parliamentary Euro-integration committee on Monday.

Transport Minister Plamen Petrov and his deputy, Zlatolina Mukova, also attended the meeting. They outlined the current state of the domestic transport sector in connection with the Transport and Telecommunications chapter of EU law which was opened in June.

A sizeable portion of domestic transport legislation is aligned to EU law, Petrov said, noting that some pieces of air transport legislation still need to be harmonized and that the agreement on the pan-European air space will have to be adopted gradually. Water transport legislation corresponds entirely to EU norms. However, meeting the very high EU shipping safety standards could present a problem.
