The traffic police in Sofia collected nearly one million leva in traffic fines between the end of August and the end of September 2007.
The announcement was made by National Police head Valentin Petrov after the conference of state crime prevention commission on September 28. According to Petrov, the higher percentage of collectibles was due to changes in the Traffic Laws.
In January 2007, changes to the Traffic Law were accepted which included higher fines and a change in the system to pay fines. Drivers risk losing their driving licenses if fines are not paid within a set period.
"If this continues, Sofia's police directorate would collect nearly 12 million leva," Petrov said.
The growth in traffic accidents remains a problem and a solution has to be found, Petrov added.
