Repairs in Sofia blocked some major streets in the capital and caused a mammoth traffic jam on the morning of August 8.
The entire Tsarigradsko Chausse boulevard in the direction of Orlov Most (Eagles Bridge) was blocked. People frustrated by public transport delays got off buses and walked along the boulevard.
Shipchenski Prohod and Evlogi Georgiev boulevards up to Madrid Boulevard were also blocked.
Slivnitsa Boulevard, usually busy during working weeks, was busier than usual.
Repairs to Tsarigradsko Chausse were earlier postponed because of bad weather. The work will, however, continue because in August most people are away on holiday, Sofia’s deputy mayor in charge of transport, Velizar Stoilov, said.
Nearly 250 000 vehicles now are at the Black Sea and another 100 000 abroad which is a third of the total number of cars in Sofia, Stoilov said. He said that Tsarigradsko Chausse has not been repaired since 1989.
There will be night shifts to make up for lost time.
