Tour de France runner-up misses Beijing Olympics
14:19 Thu 31 Jul 2008 - Elitsa Savova

Australian Cadel Evans, who ranked second in the overall standing by points of Tour de France 2008, just behind Spaniard Carlos Sastre, will miss the 2008 Beijing Olympic time trial.

Evans injured his knee after slipping on a wet floor at a Tour de France after party on Sunday night, BBC reported on 31 July 2008.

“I slipped on a wet floor on Sunday night and my team [Silence Lotto] doctor immediately had a look at it and said not to worry […] But on the flight home my knee began to swell up so I had to consider going to see a specialist who recommended cancelling my ride in the criterium in Belgium in favour of getting some scans done,” said Evans as quoted by BBC.

The three-time world champion Michael Rogers will take the place of Evans in the time trial on 13 August. Evans could still compete in the road race on 9 August, but the decision would be made by August 4.

“I can still make a significant contribution to the team effort for the road race,” BBC quoted Evans as saying.
