Tottenham's Spanish manager Juande Ramos was ready to fight to keep Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatrov at his team, The Daily Telegraph reported. Amid the new wave of rumours about a possible summer move for Berbatov, the Spaniard had once again affirmed his wish to keep him, the newspaper said. A hefty amount of money would be required for any transfer.
“We want him to keep on playing for Tottenham, but we understand that he is an ambitious player (…) There are many great clubs that want to sign him, he deserves it because he is a great footballer,” Ramos said.
According to the newspaper, it was thought that any summer move for Berbatov would require offers in excess of £20 million.
Berbatov’s intentions were still uncertain, but he had already showed his commitment to Spurs when he chose to remain with the London club instead of accepting a move to Manchester United in January.
Reigning European and world champions Milan is interested in the striker. Berbatov’s manager Emil Dantchev said that “Milan is one of the biggest clubs in Europe and if there was interest we would discuss it with Dimitar.”
Dantchev confirmed that his client was happy, and focusing on his football. “Dimitar is concentrating on his job with Tottenham. There is plenty of time until the transfer window,” he said. Still he added that “He is happy. But what I know from my 25 years in football is that if a player is happy somewhere, it does not mean he cannot be happy somewhere else.”
