The president of Tottenham Daniel Levy “refuses to be bullied into selling star asset Dimitar Berbatov” during the January 2008 transfer window.

Despite all the speculations over the Bulgarian striker leaving and statements from his manager that Berbatov would like to move to a bigger club, Levy was determined that he would not sell until the summer, Daily Mail said.

Levy told coach Juande Ramos to include Berbatov in his plans for the rest of the season.

According to the newspaper, Levy had told associates that Berbatov would "stay put whether he likes it or not.” Levy was ready to risk the 30 million pounds that Berbatov's was expected to drop value until the end of the season.

Berbatov had begun “to realise that he will not be granted his wish to leave Spurs over the next three weeks,” Daily Mail said.

The newspaper quoted the striker as saying “there are too many speculations around my name, but most of them are foolish. It's absurd and I'm tired of seeing my name in the newspapers. I'm a Tottenham player and I'm trying to give my best so I can help my team. I'm happy at the moment. You can win titles and medals with every team and I can win with Tottenham, too."

Manchester United had already expressed direct interest in Berbatov. The club’s chief executive David Gill contacted Levy in December 2007 but it seems that United would have to wait until the summer to make an official move.
