Top seeds pack up after Wimbledon fourth round

Serbian star Jelena Jankovic followed Maria Sharapova on June 30 2008 and left Wimbledon after losing to Tamarine Tanasugarn from Thailand.

It took 31-years-old Tanasugarn just 75 minutes to deal with young and ambitious Jankovic (6-3, 6-2), which surprised everyone at the All England Club lawns.

The win not only made Tanasugarn the oldest player to reach the last eight of the tournament, but ended a tradition of 81 years. As Eurosport put it, for the first time since 1927, when full seeding were introduced, the top three women' seeds failed to reach the final stage of Wimbledon.

It became possible after number one Ana Ivanovic and world number two Sharapova were both sent out of Wimbledon.

Fourth seed Svetlana Kouznetsova also had to pack up and leave after losing to Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska (4-6 6-1 5-7)

Their loss might turn fortunate for the Williams sisters Venus and Serena, both of whom progressed to the quarters and are looking at yet another final among them.

Another potential winner of the big drama that happened on June 30 might by the only top seed left in the tournament, Elena Dementieva, who easily reached the quarterfinals after winning 6-2, 6-1 against Israel's Shahar Peer.

In the end, the quarterfinal draw sent Venus Williams against Tanasugarn, Dementieva against her fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, Radwanska against Serena Williams and China's Jie Zheng against Nicole Vaidisova from the Czech Republic.

In the men's draw Wimbledon might see another final played between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal after this year's French Open.

Defending champion Federer won a crucial win against Australia's Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets - 7-6 (9-7), 6-2, 6-4.

In the quarterfinal Federer will meet Croatia's Mario Ancic, who managed to get past Spain's Fernanado Verdasco.

Nadal is yet to find out the name of his quarterfinal opponent, but the Spaniard is showing few problems in dealing with the grass of Wimbledon after cruising through matches with Andreas Beck, Ernests Guilbis, Nicolas Kiefer and Mikhail Youzhny.
