The top 10 Bulgarian athletes of 2006 were named during a special award ceremony. Bulgaria's coach of the year also received an award.
Martin Stoev, the coach of the national volleyball team, received the distinction. The national team won bronze medals from a world championship for the first time over the past 20 years under his guidance.
Stoev said that the team wanted to win the championship but the third place was a good achievement as well. The team was going to carry on and to succeed in other competitions as well, Stoev said as quoted by BGNES Sport agency.
Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov awarded the top 10 athletes and the coach of the year. The overall award pool was 135 000 leva.
Ice dance couple Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski were named athletes of 2006. They received a 30 000 leva award for the achievement.
