TO THE EDITOR: Freedom for Kasparov
17:00 Fri 30 Nov 2007

We strongly express our intellectual and cordial will and support for the great man (also chess grandmaster and former world chess champion) Garry Kasparov to immediately be released from the brutality of a jail sentence of five days, since being arrested by police on November 24 2007 in Moscow while trying to present a letter of protest against the politics of president Putin and the upcoming election!

Accordingly, we support Garry Kasparov and his democratic movement United Civil Front (respectively, the coalition The Other Russia) to be given an equal chance in both the parliamentarian election (December 2 2007) and the next year’s presidential race!

* Bulgarian news agency BTA reported that opposition MPs in the Bulgarian Parliament issued a declaration on November 28 denouncing the use of violence against the opposition in Russia and calling for the immediate release from remand of the opposition representatives. The declaration was signed by deputies of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, the United Democratic Forces, the Bulgarian Popular Union and the group of independents. They said that Russia was headed for an autocratic regime and recall that the Other Russia leader and presidential candidate Garry Kasparov was arrested along with scores of demonstrators and sent to prison a week before the parliamentary elections in Russia.
