Another Balkan war?

Sir

The Serbs in Bosnia and Kosovo have threatened to restart the Balkan wars in Bosnia-Herzegovina that destroyed the Former Yugoslavia in the 1990s if the United Nations grants independence to the disputed region of Kosovo.
These threats from the Serbs to make war in one location (Bosnia) because they do not get what they want in another place (Kosovo) is a terrible indication of the terror-minded Serb population and political leadership as it was similar types of statements that caused and started the most inhumane wars in this half of the century as the Serbs began their campaigns of national slaughter which have changed the world and caused many more problems including a radicalisation of militant Muslims worldwide as well as desperate situations all across South Eastern Europe. The Serbs are represented as half of Bosnia’s population, although they live in their own separate region in Bosnia, and are a violent but shrinking segment of the Kosovo population. Recent alarming statements from Serb leaders and paramilitaries have promised violence and killing if the Kosovo question is answered.
Can the world tolerate, and will the world benefit from, another terrible bout of extreme violence and murder from the Serbs, or will the world and particularly the United States be harmed diplomatically and militarily or financially if the Serbs carry out their plans of violence and ethnic slaughter reminiscent of the 1991-1995 wars in Bosnia and Croatia and in Kosovo in 1999?
The US will most likely suffer diplomatically, militarily and financially if the Serbs re-ignite their campaigns of violence, ethnic killing and beastly behavior against any groups in Bosnia, Kosovo or Croatia. Years of American peacekeeping as well as tens of billions of dollars will de destroyed by the Serbs’ extreme violence and ethnic hate.

Seeking Yovkov’s Albena

Sir

I live in Belgium and have been looking for Yordan Yovkov’s book Albena in English for a long time.
I came across your website, which is very interesting and well done and thought that you were the right people of whom to ask the question.
Could you be so kind to help me out?

Best regards

@Kevin Beck. You are not very bright. Serbs aren't asking for war. Bosnian muslims and Kosovo muslims want war and say they will fight if necessary. Serbs have repeatedly said they won't fight or attack anyone. Serbs only claim if Kosovo becomes independent, so will Serb part of Bosnia. Its fair. Muslims in Bosnia then say they will fight. Kevin, you are twisting stuff around. Wars in Bosnia didn't start with Serbs, but by muslims. Before the war in Bosnia, Serbs held over 60% of Bosnian territory. We merely took what was Serbian. In Croatia Serbs lived in over 30-40%, I don't know exact number there. People like you made it look as if Serbs occupied these areas. We live in these areas for over 2500 years. Before being Serbs, these people were Illyrian, Thracian, Macedonian, Greek. They were Orthodox, and in ex-Yugoslavia if you are Orthodox you are Serb. If you are Catholic you are a Croatian, just like many Italians in Istra, became Croats. You don't know the first thing about these people. So stick to your Cartoon Network.

Respond to Luke S. First off, It seems that you are the one who needs to get all the facts correct. Serbs did start the war and are looking to start another war. It has been well documented and proven. Secondly, today internationally the serbs are seen to be very nationalistic bunch and thus much disliked and therefore trying to enforce their claim on territory that never had anything to do with them. Kosovo will be independent next year while Bosnia and Herzegovina will be united again while serbia and serbs are becoming smaller and smaller.

Peter, You sound very much like either a Croatian or an Albanian. Your last comment about Serbia becoming smaller and smaller is the same comment used by those two groups to describe Serbia as Nokia, becoming smaller and smaller. Serbs have always lived on that land. The Turks invaded Bosnia and converted Serbs and to a lesser degree Croats to Islam. You see that land always belonged to the Serbs and smaller part to Croatians. The Muslims decided to rule that land again and naturally the Serbs needed to defend their land, homes and family. Did you conveniently forget that the first blood spilled in Bosnia was Serbian? Muslim extremists attacked a Serbian wedding killing a family member? Kosovo has always be Serbian. Please read a history book before you accuse Serbs of invading their own land. Again, decades of systematic ethnic cleansing on the Albanian part and terror they endured forced many Serbs to flee Kosovo long before the war started. Why are many of the Serbs that are left in Kosovo living behind barbed wire and having to be escorted in armored vehicles to schools and churches by NATO? Why did 200,000 Serbs get expelled from Kosovo by the Albanians under the noses of NATO? Read a book by John Pilger called "The New Rulers of the World" where he states all that before you write your ridiculous comments. Propaganda is a powerful tool and is used regularly by CNN.

Unfortunatelly for all nations living on Serbian lands,Communism claimed most of the democratic Serbs that had influence in politics and everyday life.Muslims of Bosnia never objected to the notion of living with Serbs, but they agressively dismissed the idea of living with former communists, now neo-nationalists.For some strange reason,Western powers did not influence a resurgency of classic Serb democratic forces but went with Milosevic. The fact that most of the former communists in Serbia are activelly engaged in organised crime(drugs and guns)led a Muslim population to war.USA activelly exploited the given situation and brought the Serbian nation to the brink of extinction. After the Serbs were pictured as a "bunch of bad guys" it was easy dealing with Kosovo. Traaditionally,Albanians hate everybody(old tribal protection) so to move them against Serbs was easy.It was harder to move Serbs against Albanians, and only in 1998 when so-called KLA got armed appropriatelly by CIA were Serbs forced to use Army against KLA.From then on,Nato only had to bomb Serbs (former communists) into surrendering Kosovo to USA led Albanian state. The only and only reason why is Kosovo still in limbo is - Russia. Whatever happens now , independence or not,a new war will be fought.More lives will perish,on both sides. Lets hope that some new distant generations will not see themselves as Albanians ,Serbs or Kosovars, but as Europeans.Lets move on.

Listen up to everybody that thinks the serbs will do the same thing they did last time during the war you are mistaken. No body won. If they are stupid enouph to try it again they are in for a big surprise. They saw what the muslims could do with just plain machine guns imagine what the muslims can do now. This is just plain stupid i wish that we can all forget about our differences and just move along with our lives and not fight everytime. Let peace be the answer not WAR.

Dimitri, there is no such race as Kosovars. Kosovo is and always was Serbian. Kosovo is a province of Serbia and nothing more. You idea of Serbs or Albanians calling themselves Europeans is very short sighted. Europe is made up of many nations. Do we tell the French or Germans to forget about being German or French or Greek or Spanish and just adopt European? Why do you think that Serbs of Albanians should abandon their nationality when the others will go on keeping theirs? Elvir, The Muslims had a lot more at their disposal than just the machine guns. Don't forget they were heavily armed by the Arabs (in particular heavily supported by Al-Qaeda) and Bosnia was crawling with the mujahadeens helping out their Muslim brothers. Writing such provocative statements as "imagine what the Muslims could do now" is not helping. Imagine what Russia can do now is the other side of the coin, but I think we should keep away from this. One very important fact to remember is that Bosnia was never Muslim. Bosnia was invaded by the Turks and the Christians finally liberated themselves from these invaders only to be take over again by the local Muslims with a little help from the CIA, and Al-Qaeda. Kosovo is a province of Serbia and not to be grabbed by Albanians simply because they have out bred the Serbian and other non Albanian population and ethnically cleansed them. Serbs were NEVER only 10% of the population there until recently. I wonder why. Do we reward this by giving them a country at the expense of another?

Considering the fact that Serbs and other Slavs came to the Balkans from the 6th century A.D. as part of the Barbarian Invasions, it is contradictory to state that they somehow own these lands. Albeit I know some of you will argue the notion that they have lived long enough off of this land to call it their own, it is likewise contradictory to claim that the Albanians of Kosovo do not have that same right to claim the land that they now cultivate, regardless of the fact that these same Albanians of Kosovo are descendants of the Dardanians who are in turn a sect of Illyric tribes. When considering history into the equation - such as the history of Serbian Kosovo - one must not forget to consider the history of Albanians in Kosovo, who have inhabited the area before the arrival of Serbs, during the arrival of Serbs, under the Serbs, under the Ottomans, under the Serbs again, and now determining their own fate. Denying the fact that Kosovar Albanians were part of the four Albanian vilayets of the Ottoman Empire means construing historical documents in regards to self-interest. It is this denial that has led to some Serbs to dismiss the fact that the Ottomans undertook frequent and detailed censuses, consistently listing Albanians as the majority in Kosovo under their reign. Was it only coincidence that right after the creation of Yugoslavia, this majority of Albanians fell sharply into a minority? Or did Serbs intentionally undercounted Albanians in order to push their own agendas? Furthermore, was it only coincidence that only after the Yugoslav Constitution of 1974 did Albanians become a majority again? Or was it that Albanians were given autonomy and Serbs were stripped off of their corruptive power in taking census in accordance to their own interests? It must thus be agreed that history only serves as positively affecting the Albanian position, hence the waning of the insistence of Serbs in regards to it. Now considering the fact that Serbian paramilitaries and armed forces, at the total control of the Serbian elite, firmly backed by the populace and the Serbian Orthodox Church, intentionally and shamelessly began Vojislav Seselj’s well planned project (look up his document) for the ethnic cleansing and expulsion of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, it is by far illogical for them to consider giving up their current liberties in order to come under that same yoke, under that same autonomy, and be discriminated against, murdered through staged ‘accidents’, or poisoned at school, and resented by every segment of Serbian society and psyche. Thomas Aquinas would consequently agree that since Serbia murdered and terrorized its own citizens, it effectively broke its contract, thus Albanians have the right and obligation to enact a new contract according to their wishes. The age of being ruled by tyrants or their descendant mimics is over, thus Kalashnikov Kostunica’s intentions of fulfilling his Uncle’s (Milosevic) dream of duping the world into giving Albanians that same autonomy that proved lethal must not be acceptable to any rational being. Given the rise of neo-Nazis in Serbia and the fact that the most popular party there being the Radical Party, whose leader is dubbed as the architect of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo – and who still wishes the deaths of millions of Albanians while standing trial at the Hague – it must come as no surprise that this nation is still engulfed in its irrational and genocidal mentality.

Ptoleme, It's interesting to read all your delusional "facts". Did you get your information from the University of Tirana which is underwritten by the propaganda of CNN? I can quote you names too. Noam Chomsky, General L. McKenzie (retired) and John Pilger all have the exact opposite view to yours. The way you have written your views certainly shows the level of hatred for the Serbs and the Orthodox church. In light of that, I think that your views are completely biased and based on extreme hatred. As you can see there are always other experts to dispute yours on the subject. Serbian people have been persecuted by Islam for centuries. Thee is proof all around of centuries of Serbian presence in Kosovo. Where is your proof that Serbia has misled the world on the break up of the population of Kosovo? Noam Chomsky disputes your theory strongly and he is a man who will not tarnish his good reputation by providing misleading and false information.

to Luke and Peggy, why would the West hate you Serbs? you are the most peaceful nation! everybody takes advantage of you! poor poor you! Get a grip...nobody wants to live with you even your brothers from Montenegro gave you the walking papers. talking about propaganda all Bosnia and Kosovo Muslims!!! in Bosnia I know for sure there are Catholics Muslims and Orthodox...in Kosovo the same and maybe its a surprise to you but I know quite some Kosovo Albanian Catholics and they have not much good to say about Serbs either...Don’t try to make it a religious thing because its not. You tried to make the Great Serbia and failed badly. Kosovo was not always yours (you first came in the 6th or 7th century and only in 1912 became a part of your proclaimed territory) and guess what it’s decided it wants nothing to do with you either. You can not rule with an iron fist anymore, not in Europe...World knows when will you find out?

Alex, When you present some facts and not accusations and you can back them up with real sources like I did then please come back and have your say. Until you can dispute the sources I quoted and give us credible sources your opinion doesn't carry much weight. We have all heard the same propaganda coming out of CNN warehouse and the impact pack journalism has on the opinion of some whose only source of information is mainstream media. Please read articles written by Gregory Clark (Australian diplomat now living in Japan and working for the Akita University). When you can show how Gregory Clark and the other prominent men are mistaken then you might be taken seriously.

Lajcak has succeeded to do what none of his predecessors did: worsening the situation in Bosnia. His only goal seems to be to accomplish the goals that the EU has set for Bosnia. But instead of doing this in the context of Dayton and Bosnia's laws and customs he storms like a tank through Bosnia's political landscape, accusing anyone who gets in his way of obstruction. Dialogue with this man seems impossible as he lacks a capability to understand the point of view of other people.

It is a riddle to me why Sofia Echo publishes a letter like that from Kevin Beck. He describes Serbs as a "terror-minded () population". Kosovo's Serbs get another jab: "a violent but shrinking segment of the Kosovo population". I won't even mention his many factual distortions. This is pure racism! What kind of pulp is Sofia Echo that they publish this kind of rubbish?

According to this article, Serbs caused all problems in this world.. "These threats from the Serbs to make war in one location (Bosnia) because they do not get what they want in another place (Kosovo) is a terrible indication of the terror-minded Serb population..." Well Mr.Beck - the unrest of Serbs in Bosnia is not because of "terror-mindedness" but because of duplicity or double-standards of the West... Bosnia was artificially kept as one state (on behest of US, to further it's advances in Arabic world) on the other hand US is trying hard to derail any possibility of negotiated settlement of Kosovo crisis. Such duplicity is easy to see - in fact it resembles strongly tobullying of Czechoslovakia by UK to cede Sudetenland ijust before of WWII. Very childish analysis Mr.Beck.

When first Serbs came down from Western Poland in 6th century, they didn't just eat everyone else that inhabited Balkans. People just assimilate into more dominant group, in this case, Serbs. Serbs gave the name and language to these people. Thats why close to if not more than 50% of population in old Yugoslavia were Serbs. So, I dont see a reason for more bloodshed, unless provoked. If Kosovo declares independence, and West backs them up, you can be sure this will create problems for many countries of the World. There is a good chance Bosnia will collapse. Its a question of what Muslims will do, because they loose 50% of territory that was never theirs, and Croats in Bosnia want to separate as well. Muslims will only inhabit small area in the middle of that region. Big problem for them. Tadic and coalition will probably fight Kosovo situation legally, not with war. There is no doubt in my mind that Albanians will declare independence in January 2008; Its on purpose, since Kosovo became Serbian in 1208 ; Question is whether or not EU will recognize them. If EU accepts them, America will too. America will not do it alone, they said this unofficially. So according to Kevin, when Croats and muslims try to separate, its legal and OK. When Serbs do it, its not OK? Why? Someone in American Congress said, its because Serbs support Russians, and whoever is with Russians, is not with America.

Albanians before the Ottoman empire we of Christian faith Orthodox to be exact, Is every one forgetting that before Yugoslavia it was Just Serbia, Tito was an Ustasha lovin communist, because of him Serbs have always suffered, We have been fighting communists for 66 years and terrorists for 600 years, Not our fault that the rest of the world is only just staring to relies the Muslim invasion, some people still have there eyes closed, I don't care about me, just my grand kids that I worry about, imagine them being slaves to Turks again. It's bound to happen 7-10 kids per Muslim family, and there all in bread so there guaranteed to reproduce. One day it might be too late to fight we will just have to submit. Hopefully not in my life time. Also Pegge you sound like an intelligent woman that is not brain washed by the media. I have read Gregory Clark's article, But it seems to fall on deaf ears, The western powers will realize one day that they helped Al-Qaeda and the teliban take Christian land and invade Europe. I know for a fact that most of European country's are having problems with Muslims, Mostly Albania's but the heroin trade from the middle east trough Kosovo is making too much money, politicians are paid off and the world still goes around. Agim Ceku Former member of the KLA which NATO and the UN consider a Terrorist organisation, Why is he allowed to walk around Serbia? why is he not the the Hague, Also the new Hashim Thaci was KLA as well. Martti Ahtisaari was paid 40 million euros to push for an Independent Kosovo. Why dose he care it's 40 MILLION EUROs, it's not his Country,40 Million Euros people not 1 million, 40 million. Also there are article from the UK, "UK facing 30-year battle against extremism": security chief BRITAIN is facing a generational battle against Islamist extremism that could take up to 30 years to win, a former British Navy chief turned security minister said. Sir Alan West, who has responsibility for security and counter-terrorism within the defence ministry, told The Sun tabloid that "we are talking about a generation - and by that I would say 30 years" "That doesn't mean necessarily that we are going to stay at a severe level of threat for all those years. But to be able to say one has absolutely changed the mind-set and thought of people is going to take a generation." All you have to do is Google, KLA, Kosovo, Grater Albania, Milos Obilic, 1389. Also there is You tube footage of Albania's destroying a Church in Kosovo in 2004, Imagine that happened in the US, there would be OUTRAGE, Bush would have pushed to invade another country in the middle east but because it's in Serbia no one cares or we get all the African Americans to move to a state were there are a majority and push for new Africa within America, do you think Bush would allow this, it would be an OUTRAGE, Also there are a lot of other country's that are hoping Kosovo wont get independence like Cyprus which is majority Turkish. The world should have let Serbs finish the job.

When will the Serbs learn that that not everyone in the former Yugoslavia is Serbian. Noone wants anything to do with them and as soon as peoples elected democracy, that became quite evident!
Comments by branislav - 08:43 24 Nov 2007
Dear Mark Spiranovich, your remark that nobody wants to live with Serbs is not quite accurate... What is happening and what happened is that everybody wanted to get the biggest share of cake for themselves. Slovenia and Croatia still have ongoing disputes - and it has noting to do with Serbs. Similar case exists with Montenegro and Croatia.
