Interior Minister Roumen Petkov said that evidence existed three members of parliament and the chief mufti Mustaffa Alli Hadji were agents of the former State Security intelligence service.

The three MPs are Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) representative Yunal Lyutfi, Ataka movement member Petar Beron and Krassimir Karakachanov from Bulgaria People's Union (BPU), Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Petkov revealed the information after bTV journalist Nikolai Barekov requested investigation whether 47 politicians, magistrates and public figures were State Security agents during the communist era.

According to the information in the classified files, Lyutfi was part of the intelligence and counter-intelligence service of the State Security since 1967. Although Karakachanov and Beron were registered as State Security agents, there is no record they reported against Bulgarian citizens.

Later Karakachanov said that he co-operated with State Security trying to protect the country's interests. He provided information on the situation of ethnic Bulgarians in today's Macedonia and the policy of former Yugoslavia against them. He denied providing information on Bulgarian citizens or domestic issues.

The classified files of the former intelligence service cause heated debates as they contain information on political repression during the communist era. Large part of the information was destroyed and lost soon after the 1989 transition to democracy.
