Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov is always at the centre of public attention - criticising the Cabinet, opening subways and overhead crossings, or fighting evil concessionaires. But on July 17, while turning the first sod on the site of a future kindergarten in the Krasno Selo neighbourhood, he found himself in an unusual situation – being hissed at by the crowd. He was even hit by an egg, thrown by an elderly lady, moments before policemen took her away.
According to Dnevnik daily, the egg hit Borissov in the head and he answered with "ще ви скъсам, комунистите, ще ви скъсам", which can be loosely translated as "I'll kick your asses, you communists, I'll kick your asses".
It turned out that the residents of the neighbourhood did not want the bliss Borissov was offering them because it would destroy one of the few parks in the neighbourhood. The protesters pitched a tent with a sign reading "the city hall = mafia", website mediapool.bg said.
Focus news agency quoted the protesters as saying that several kindergartens had been destroyed in the district and other buildings emerged at their place. They feared that the project was launched as a kindergarten, but would end up in something else. It was the neighbourhood with the most kindergartens, but the majority of them were deserted or used for other purposes, the protesters said.
Borissov tried to explain that 500 children in the area were waiting for a place in a kindergarten and promised that no other building, except for the kindergarten, would be built at the spot. Despite the public disapproval, Borissov turned the first sod of the construction.
