The Bulgarian-Macedonian brew

Author: GOD: “If in my hands I had a gun and a bullet and before me - a Serbian and an Albanian, I would shoot the Serbian with a smile! I hate the Serbians because of Macedonia!”

Author Vasilev explains GOD’s ill will: “Kosovo is to Serbians what Macedonia is to us. In 1918 Serbia did all it could to tear Macedonia off Bulgaria. It will not stop at anything to wipe the Bulgarian spirit out of Macedonia. Now it is being paid back to. With the interest rate! Kosovo will never again be part of Serbia! There is a God!”

Author: Umko: “What the Serbians have done with Macedonia is irrelevant. If Kosovo splits from Serbia, some day the Kurdjali region will split from Bulgaria. The precedent will be set. That is why we should unreservedly support Serbia.”

Author Pitbulla is more clear-headed: “You are wrong, my man... no precedent will be set because we have not been at war against the Kurdjali region, as were the Serbians against Kosovo...”

This comes from a Mediapool forum following an article about Kosovo’s difficult status that was originally published in Der Berliner Zeitung under the headline Embers of a Balkan fire (the translation is The Sofia Echo’s).

So why quote bloggers on Balkan issues?

Because Bulgarian-Macedonian relations, that politicians would call excellent and that ordinary people would call historically strained, have been brewing rather awkwardly lately, with dubious results.

And because the above has such reminiscence of the unhealthy Balkan speculation about who might do what to whom if this or - God forbid - the other, happens.

This article is dedicated to the Gorani who, along with some Serbs and many Kosovars, also live in Kosovo. And which Albanian linguist Skender Gashi recently called the historical and political apple of discord of the Balkans (in a lecture given at the Bulgarian cultural institute in Vienna).

The Gorani are 2000 or so people who live in 24 villages in the Gora region in the Shar mountain in Kosovo, mostly, but also in Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia (see map). And also sometimes in central Serbia, Italy, Turkey...

The Gorani, geographically and linguistically, are an island of Slav-speaking population, Gashi says, but actually speak an archaic version of Bulgarian, and   - even more actually  - Bulgarians Vlachs, Gashi says.

But Macedonians claim them also. And so do Bosniaks, and Serbs. And, then, in the old Balkan way of things...you know.

For the sake of political correctness, let’s just say that they have the potential to upset.

So, each party claims the Gorani. But we are concentrating on Macedonia and Bulgaria.

On August 14, the Democratic Movement for the Restoration of Macedonia (DOM) said that the question of the Gorani should be included in Kosovo status talks. “This issue is of interest to the Republic of Macedonia because (the Gorani speak) the Macedonian language and are of the Muslim confession,” said DOM leader Liliana Popovska. The Gorani should be guaranteed the freedom to use Macedonian in schools and mosques because that, among all else, would prevent them from being assimilated, Popovska said.

Her statement would seem to prove that, as Director of the Bulgarian National Museum of History Bozhidar Dimitrov says, Macedonians, unlike Bulgarians, have a state policy regarding minorities.

Another thing - Popovska’s statement comes eight months after the Gorani themselves demanded that they be included in status talks. That happened at an international conference of the Gorani in Skopje that Gorani people from Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia and Albania attended, according to Macedonian internet site Prespa Sky.

Apart from being included in status talks by both Serbians and Kosovars, the Gorani asked to receive the status of a Macedonian national minority with an Islamic confession; to have Macedonian passports; to have a cultural centre opened; and get a better infrastructure (more specifically, a Skopje - Dragash bus line).

But, Prespa Sky also noted, on December 26, the Gorani also asked the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to register “yet another Bulgarian national entity” (the wording is theirs) -  that of the Gorani and Muslims from the Gora region.

And also formed a Culture and Education Association Bulgarians - Muslims. The Association, according to the head of the Bulgarian diplomatic mission in Kosovo Nikolai Kolev as reported by Prespa Sky, was not founded with Bulgarian participation.

Ethnic specialists consider the Gorani to be Islamized Macedonians, the publication continues.

When forming their association, the Gorani had sent a note to the Serbian state television, saying that their initiative had never had the ambition to change their age-long national identity, Prespa Sky said.

Also, they were receiving documents proving their Bulgarian descent from the Bulgarian diplomatic mission in Kosovo, but not with the intention to get a Bulgarian or any other country’s passport - because no institution in Kosovo issued passports anyway, Prespa Sky said.

Of course, the Gorani do get Bulgarian passports. “They don’t like getting Macedonian citizenship so much,” Dimitrov says.

For understandable economical EU reasons, “not to speak of this trade (in passports) going on,” a representative of a cultural institution in Sofia told The Sofia Echo, but - let’s say  - for language and historical reasons too.

Unfortunately, this touches on another tricky subject - that Bulgaria has of late been issuing an inordinate number of passports. This was described in an August 13 report in the Sunday Telegraph (authored by a Skopje and a Bucharest correspondent) as “a give-away passports bonanza”

The context of the Telegraph article makes it overly important for Bulgaria. The UK is now bracing for about 40 000 to 60 000 (the optimistic version) or up to 400 000 (the pessimistic version) Romanians and Bulgarians expected to arrive in the country after January 1 2007. Some of them criminals. Both scenarios would trouble the British labour market, predictions go.  British immigration authorities are reported to be now preparing regulations to temporarily ban the entrance of immigrants.

So, the Telegraph article mirrors the urge to keep hordes of Bulgarians and Romanians away from the UK. And smears Bulgaria’s image.

And what does this reporter, as a Bulgarian, do about that?

This reporter gets upset and angry and goes home. On the way home, thinks about the problem, and then asks an Albanian friend to agree to being quoted that if he was offered a job in Bulgaria, he would jump at the idea, partly because he had become, while living in Bulgaria for four years, somewhat Bulgarianised. And the Albanian friend answered: “You have fallen into the vicious trap of the cheapest form of journalism in the Balkans, the one flared with nationalistic fervour that demonises the other nationalities.”

I suppose that I did fall in the trap, somewhat. And I guess that the Balkans do suffer from their black hole nationalist traps, journalists included.

But, as head of the Macedonian Culture and Information Centre in Sofia said, stupidity affects all people, not specific ethnic groups.

This article is irrelevant. This topic I believe is a very important one however the way the article is structured is ignorant. The first paragraph which is a quote against Serbs is irrelevant once the rest of the article is read. It seems that this article adds a little of its own "Western" anti-Serbian propaganda into the media mix which is sad to see considering that Serbs come from an similar historical background as do Bulgarians. This article has a political twist which was written to stir up further conflict in the region. I am sad to see such poorly written article with such poor taste. This I would not even expect from the West let alone from the Balkans.

For the last 200 years Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia have tried to tear Macedonia apart and take their history along with it. Why? What have the Macedonian People done to the Bulgar's, Greeks and the Serbs? I KNOW WHY!!!!! Bulgaria owns a piece of the old Macedonia (about 25%). Greece owns the biggest piece of the old Macedonia (about 51%). And the Serbs used to own the old and current Republic of Macedonia (about 25%). COMMON SENCE!!!! Now i know why these 3 countries hate Macedonia, because they have something to lose and that's LAND. P.S History always repeat its self.

I wonder if anyone in this world ever searched, looked up at this site and said “wait a minute; I finally understand!” People like that however are rare. As technology advances life is made easier and unfortunately people become lazy and dependant on others to feed them information which may or may not be good information. Does all information portray reality? Not at all. There is information out there that parades as “the truth” which in fact is “lies”. Consider the Bulgar propaganda about Macedonia and the Macedonian people. Some may ask “what is this all about?” Yet others will accept it as truth. History my dear for me has been a painful experience something that you may find hard to believe because you are not Macedonian. I sometimes wish the entire world becomes Macedonian at least for a while just to experience and feel what it is like. Bulgars who live free in luxury and whose biggest complaint is why they don’t win a car with a sunroof need to wake up to the reality of how the rest of the world lives. They need to go to Bulgar for a while and pose as Macedonians. So if this is the first time you’ve come across Macedonia and Macedonians allow me to introduce us. Our country, that is the free part of Macedonia known as the Republic of Macedonia is located north of Greece and south of Serbia and Kosovo. I would advise you to consult a new map or go on the internet and take only a few seconds on Google to find it. Macedonians are more than a nation, they are an ancient people who for a thousand years have sought peace and like to live in harmony with nature and with each other. The most important thing for Macedonians is family and the desire to stay together. Macedonians also love their food and go through extraordinary efforts to prepare it. No one is hungry in Macedonia because Macedonians make sure everyone eats, strangers included. You will never find a Macedonian eating who won’t offer you some food or drink. The moonshine is good but watch how much you drink, Macedonians make very strong moonshine. Our biggest holiday is Orthodox Easter. If you happen to be there on this most important day don’t hesitate to participate in the egg contests. Macedonians are naturally witty and smart. They work hard to survive but not to live luxuriously. I guess that’s my definition of Macedonia and the Macedonians. Every Macedonian has his or her opinion of their Macedonian experience which may be different than mine. I bet there are many things you can learn about Macedonia and the Macedonians online, but you need to find the right websites, not the Bulgars/Greko propaganda ones. And now I want to move on to something else. I want to call it Freedom of Speech and for those who don’t know what it mean, it’s best you read the Australian Constitution. I went through the effort of reading it and I can tell you there is nothing like it anywhere, especially in Bulgar, the so called “cradle of democracy”. So there I am now experiencing my own Freedom of Speech. This comes from a wonderful lady you go girl

I wish one day all nations in the world UNITE under one simple United Nations government and discuss all old and new unresolved problems and conflicts in all countries around the world. I wish they would act like a world court instead of a political institution and have legal powers and enact laws and a Constitution that will make all people equal in the world. They should stop all conflicts and prevent wars, discrimination, hate and all forms of propaganda. I wish this Court would resolve the Macedonian question and lawfully rule in support of the truth once and for all. I wish this court would burn all propaganda books and the lies they spread and return art and symbols to the rightful owners so that justice can be done. I’ve had enough of European Union politics and the way they treat my country and my people with their requirements and making our laws. Politics must be different from law. Politics is like a debate consisting of arguments and claims that do not necessarily have any proof. But law, law is something legal, something well respected and enforced in favor of justice. If such a court existed and had its own unbiased advocates, jurors and judges all Macedonia has to do is produce proof and witnesses and win its case to exist as a full nation and people in this world. The Bulgars may look strong on the outside because they had years to prepare and spread their lies and propaganda but lies are lies and the truth will surface one day given a fair chance. Because they had “preferential treatment” in the past Bulgars feel like they are something special but in reality they are no better or different than the rest of their Balkan brethren. Bulgars/Greko had its day of bullying and loathing us and it is now time to pay for its crimes. The truth is hurtful to the Bulgars/Greeks. If you don’t believe me just say the word “Macedonia” in front of them and see how they react. Ask them “I am Macedonian how does that make you feel?” You can call me Slav, no problem, so let’s start calling each other names like little children and see where it leads. You call me Slav I will call you a “Terrorist”, how does that sound? I am a Slav speaker and you are a bully. Our nicknames fit well don’t you think? You lied to my people during the Balkan Wars pretending you came to liberate them but instead you occupied my country and annexed it for yourself and then you terrorized my people. And that my friend, in addition to being a terrorist, makes you a liar and a thief. You forcefully changed the names of my cities, towns, villages, rivers and lakes and tortured my people to change their names and identity and Hellenized/Bulgard my favourite heroes Goce, Philip and Alexander. What do I call you for doing that? Would you wish for an unbiased world court to exist? Most hurtful to me is that I show you myself as proof of my being Macedonian and you say “I don’t exist!”.

Macedonia A land crying But never said sorry For evil dying already. A land smiling For peace and love Honored births of kings’ sons. A land trembling With words and fire Drank wine with unanimous desire. A land knowing What suffering means Sings songs from dusk to dawn. A land speaking For the holly past, In the people’s mind will last forever. A land sleeping In centuries of horror Had passion for freedom But bowed head sorrowfully. A land singing For all spent tears In one river, To overcome her fears. A land playing Music for wanted dreams, Came true when people went overseas. A land mattering What is good and bad Calls for peace around the world, No matter the future. This land makes me cry When I hear her name, It has always been, And it will always stay the same. By Maria Poetry in motion: "We all know that lack is black and white is white, but the Greek logic is that Macedonia is Bulgar as if black is white!"

"Macedonians are more than a nation, they are an ancient people who for a thousand years have sought peace and like to live in harmony with nature and with each other." Ha-ha-ha-ha! You poor macedono-australian! You certainly are a victum of insuccessfull abortion!! How many books you have ever red in entire yoor life? Of cours there is a macedonoan nation-it's been created by Tito and Jugoslav Communists in 1944. They created a "macedonian" language as well. Now you obviously are searching roots in ancient macedonians, aren't you? You don't have any history since your nation started in late 1944 and now trying to fabricate history! Shame on you!
