A celebration at the Danube bridge connecting the Bulgarian Rousse and the Romanian Giurgiu will take place on July 18 and 19. The Bridge Festival, a project in the framework of European Sound Delta, is a gathering of music and sound-art, and anyone who loves such things.
Performances and other artistic happenings will occur in Rousse at Dom Canetti on 12 Slavyanska Str and in the open air at the Roman fortress Sexaginta Prista (4 Kaloyan Str). A parallel programme is planned for Giurgiu.
More than 30 artists from Europe, Canada and the United States have been invited to take part with concerts, live performances and sound installations.
Organisers say that entry to The Bridge Festival is "almost free" – the only charge is a one lev ticket for the concerts that happen at night.
Space disco guru Prins Thomas is scheduled to play on the first day of the festival, along with Mira Calix, who will give a laptronica live set in which the sound of pieces of wood, the buzz of insects and bird songs will come together.
Also in line to set the atmosphere are artist/composer Phill Niblock and video/multimedia artist Katherine Liberovskaya, experimental curiousity Candie Hank and the Berlin duo Chica and the Folder, along with Joachim Montessuis, Julien Ottavi, TÔ and WPMG from France, and Pistamashina from Bulgaria and Sillyconductor and Minus & Vali from Romania.
On July 19 in Rousse, a 10-hour set called Le Placard will be held at Dom Canetti. It has been described as a way to expand the performance experience through headphones, as the listening public will have increased concentration.
Rousse's Le Placard is one of many such that will take place around the world on the same day.
After 10pm on both evenings of the festival, DJs and VJs will demonstrate their talent at the Roman fortress. Names include WPMG, Chica and the Folder, Sillyconductor, Tom Wilson, Prins Thomas, Cosmiq Microbiq, SKVJS, Pistamashina, Mira Calix, Minus si Ion, Candie Hank, Camil, Alien Pimp, and VJ Vali Chincisan.
The Bridge Festival is organised by Collectif Mu (Paris), Rokolectiv (Bucharest), Evropeiski Prostranstva (Rousse), the International Elias Canetti Society (Rousse) and Arena Media (Rousse). Sponsors include the European Union's culture programme, European Culture Foundation, ArcelorMittal, the Romanian culture ministry, the German embassy in Bulgaria, Stiftung Robert Bosch, Rousse municipality, Rousse Harbour Complex and Rousse Regional History Museum.
