The Sun newspaper in Britain, the biggest tabloid newspaper in the world, has started a campaign in support of Michael Shields. The 19 year-old British citizen was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the attempted murder of the Bulgarian bartender Martin Georgiev. The publication appeals to its audience to send requests to Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov. A special request form says that Shields is innocent and should be freed. The case gained notoriety in Britain after one of Sheilds' companions, Graham Sankey, confessed to local police that he had attacked Georgiev. Shields' family said it would protest in front of the Bulgarian embassy in London and if necessary, in front of the Parliament building. Maria Shields, the mother of the detainee, said it was evident that Sankey was guilty and her son should be released immediately.
Shields stayed in Golden Sands resort with a group of Liverpool fans returning from a football match in Istanbul. Another member of the group, Anthony Wilson was detained for hooliganism and the possession of hashish, but received a suspended sentence. (Novinar)
