STRICTER REGULATIONS NEEDED TO ENSURE ROAD SAFETY IN BULGARIA
11:29 Mon 19 Mar 2007

High speed and irresponsible driving continue causing major traffic accidents in Bulgaria, chair of the parliamentary transport committee Yordan Mirchev said.

Over the weekend, various major accidents caused the death of 14 people in Bulgaria.

In the coming week the transport committee will examine on second reading changes to the road traffic law. The project features stricter measures to deal with intoxicated drivers and those driving irresponsibly.

Some of the changes include depriving drivers of their vehicle, in case they commit violations, Focus news agency reported.

Mirchev said that the new regulations caused heated discussions, since some MPs considered them too harsh.

Since fines are not imposed strictly at the moment, drivers continue being irresponsible, Mirchev said. It is better to sanction strictly a couple of people than to have innocents get hurt because of their behaviour, he said.
