STAVISKI ACCUSATION FAULTY - BULGARIAN DEPUTY PROSECUTOR-GENERAL
11:43 Fri 21 Sep 2007

The Bulgarian public prosecutor made mistakes in the accusation against double world champion figure skating Maksim Staviski, Deputy Prosecutor-General Kamen Sitnilski said at the sitting of the Supreme Court on September 21.

Accusations brought against Staviski only included causing severe physical harm in the accident near Ropotamo River on the road between Primorsko and Bourgas, and does not include the accusation of death. In the accident the 24 year old driver of the car hit by Staviski, Petur Petrov from Sliven, was killed and 18 year old Manuela Gorsova end up in coma. Two passengers of the car were injured in the accident.

The Bulgarian public prosecutor made a serious omission, according to Sitnilski, though the mistake could be corrected. He said that within one month the final accusations against Staviski would be brought to court, which would include both the accusations of death after use of alcohol and of causing severe physical harm.

Technical and chemical expertises are ready, which would determine Staviski's guilt and the fact that he had used alcohol, Sitnilski said.

Witnesses to Staviski using alcohol that night still need to be interviewed.

If found quilty, Staviski could face 3 to 10 years in jail.
