Spain supported Bulgaria's EU entry on January 1 2007, Spanish state secretary for the European Union Alberto Navarro said.
Radio France Internationale reported that Navarro spoke about the future of the European Union and discussed the accession of new member states.
Spain usually gave full support for the enlargement process, Navarro said. The reasons for backing Bulgaria and Romania's EU entry were three.
Accession of the two countries could contribute to Europe's political stability, Navarro said. At the same time the accession of new countries was going to stabilise the European economy and create more workplaces. Spain also had its ethical reasons for supporting the enlargement, Navarro said.
Navarro said that globalisation made it difficult for countries to find solutions on the national level. Joint European initiatives were the only possible option, said he.
