Early in the morning of December 4, under extra police protection, the Souhodol landfill opened again to Sofia's waste, despite protests.

The first dozen trucks with Sofia's waste arrived before eight in the morning, media reported.

Around 20 protesters from Souhodol were protesting against the re-opening of the site, mediapool.bg said.

The Souhodol landfill was closed in October 2005, leading to Sofia's waste-crisis. Since then, Sofia's waste has been stored in bales in sites in Tsalapitsa and Karlovo. Both sites reached the agreed limits in November 2007.

The Souhodol landfill was re-opened at the orders of the Council of Ministers, after experts agreed it had sufficient room to store Sofia's waste, investor.bg said.

Bentsislav Bozjilov from the Association for the protection of life and health of Souhodol said that protests would continue, despite that police was keeping protesters at a distance and the strong rain. "Souhodol has been blocked by police, protesters are kept at about 500 meters from the site," Bozjilov said.
