Souhodol divided over landfill

Souhodol citizens remained divided over the use of the Souhodol landfill, where Sofia's household refuse is currently dumped, Dnevnik daily said.

In the morning of February 10 the traditional Sunday protest of about 50 Souhodol citizens was held in with dozens of policemen present. Meanwhile, another group of Souhodol citizens signed an agreement, worth 35 million leva, for the use of the landfill with Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov. The money would be invested in the Souhodol area over the next two years.

The Souhodol landfill was reopened at the beginning of December 2007 after it had been closed two years before. The closure had been a pre-election promise of then-Sofia mayor Stefan Sofianski. In the spring of 2007 however, the Sofia municipal council and mayor Borissov decided to reopen the landfill. In mid-November 2007 the Government sided with the Sofia municipality to reopen the landfill. However, it later announced this was only an act of moral support to the position taken by the Environment and Water Affairs Ministry, Dnevnik daily said.

The agreement with Borissov was signed on February 10 by the Dialogue for Souhodol society. The society was founded shortly after the governmental decision to reopen the landfill, with the idea to negotiate a compensation with the Sofia municipality, since the landfill was going to be used anyway. However, Dialogue for Souhodol managed to gather only about 30 supporters at a December 2007 Souhodol meeting.

The society For the Protection of the Health and Life of Souhodol Population exists for seven years now. In recent months it has organised protests against the use of the dump every Sunday, attracting about 50 to 100 Souhodol residents to protest each time.

Nearly 5000 people live in Souhodol.
