This summer Sofia would not experience problems with refuse collection, the capital's mayor Boiko Borissov said.
The municipality found new terrains, where packaged waste could be stored, Novinar newspaper reported. New facilities could store waste for up to three years, municipality representatives said.
Borissov' statement came in response to the warning of the regional environmental inspectorate that the lack of storage capacity of the current refuse collection sites could lead to new crisis in the capital.
Current storage terrains have been used since October. Refuse is packaged and stored there.
Deputy mayor Milor Mihaolv said that Sofia would not suffer from a refuse-collection crisis. New terrains near Kremikovtsi have been purchased and the procedure for turning them into storage areas began, Mihailov said.
On Thursday the municipal council would meet to discuss refuse collection and storage. One of the option to be considered was the re-opening of Suhodol refuse site, Novinar reported. The dump was closed after Suhodol residents protested twice, stopping refuse collection in Sofia for days.
