15:15 Wed 12 Sep 2007

A memorandum of understanding between the Delhi University and the Sofia University was signed on September 12 by Alexander Fedotov, vice rector of the University of Sofia, and A.K. Dubey, registrar of the Delhi University in the presence of Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev and Indian vice chancellor Deepak Pental.

Stanishev announced a scholarship for students interested in studying Bulgarian language and literature, Indian daily The Hindu said.

In a speech to students at Delhi University, Stanishev said that studying Bulgarian would give Indian students career prospects, especially in the light of Bulgarian-Indian economic co-operation, the Bulgarian Government media office said.

Sofia University will give a full state stipend for Indian students to study Bulgarian Philology.

Stanishev, speaking to the students about bilateral investments in information technology, emphasised Bulgaria’s experience in IT.

Trade was important for economic growth, but without investment in science, economic growth was not possible, he said.

Later the same day, Stanishev addressed the Indian Council on World Affairs, outlining Bulgaria’s priorities as a European Union member.
