The world cup snowboarding Big Air, which is to start on December 22 in the centre of Sofia, would generate a loss for the municipality of close to 4 million leva only in traffic jams, caused by the event on the busiest days just before the Christmas holidays, Dnevnik daily said.

Other losses for the municipality would include the closed parking on Ploshtad Battenberg, for which the organisation does not pay anything, and advertisement losses, Dnevnik said.

On December 20, municipal councillor Ivailo Yonkov asked mayor Boiko Borissov why the event had not been moved to the Borissova Gradina (Boris' Gardens) or Yuzjniya Park (South Park).

The event would take place on Ploshtad Battenberg, and was organised by the Bulgarian Ski Association. Chairperson of the association was concessionaire of the ski piste in Bansko and owner of the ski lifts on Vitosha, Tseko Minev, Dnevnik said.

Borissov said that Ploshtad Battenberg was the only place which met the requirements of the organisation. Deputy mayor for transport Velizar Stoilov said that the original idea to close the square entirely had been changed, so that traffic in two directions would remain possible.

"As far as advertisement is concerned, Sofia will not pay anything for the fact that it is going to be advertised on Eurosport and CNN," Stoilov said.
