With a solemn ceremony at the city hall on November 19 Sofia's mayor Boiko Borissov, 61 municipal councillors, 24 district mayors and 32 municipality mayors officially took office, zagrada.bg said.

The new Sofia Municipal Council consists of 33 Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) representatives, 12 Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) representatives, 11 Alliance for Sofia representatives, 3 ultra-nationalist party Ataka representatives and 2 National Movement for Stability and Progress (NMSP) representatives.

The Sofia Municipal Council meeting was led by the eldest municipal councillor Lilyanda Elenkova from GERB.

Later Andrei Ivanov from GERB was elected chairman of Sofia Municipal Council, zagrada.bg reported. He was elected through secret voting, where he received 34 votes. His opponent Georgi Kadiev from BSP received 16 votes. 11 of the ballots were invalid.

“I will do everything I can to ensure GERB's open government programme is carried out. There is hard work ahead of us and it will be extremely important to me to be able to count on councillors from all political groups,” Ivanov said.

BSP's Hristofor Hristov, GERB's Orlin Ivanov and Alliance for Sofia's Martin Zaimov were both elected deputy chairman of Sofia Municipal Council, zagrada.bg reported.
