SOFIA MAYOR PLANS NEW SPORT FACILITIES
13:47 Tue 11 Apr 2006

Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov met the World Champions from Calgary and Bulgaria's leading ice dance couple Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski.

After the meeting Denkova said the mayor will support Bulgarian figure skating both as professional and mass sport. However, building a skating rink to satisfy Olympic criteria is still hard to achieve, Focus Sport reported.

Chief architect Peter Dikov is working on a skating rink project which, if approved, will be carried out as early as 2014. Within two weeks Dikov has to propose at least two sites suitable for the construction of a professional skating rink. Borissov also proposes the establishment of movable rinks in front of the National Palace of Culture and in the Borissov Garden.

Borissov also plans to re-construct the Ariana lake in the Borissov Garden. Funds for the renovation have already been found. Once the lake is filled with water, pedalos will become the chief attraction.
