SOFIA MAYOR CONGRATULATES BULGARIA'S PRESIDENT ON SECOND TERM IN OFFICE
10:42 Thu 27 Jul 2006

Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov congratulated President Georgi Purvanov for his upcoming second term in office during an interview for national television channel bTV.

The only person responsible for the failure of right wing parties to select a competitive enough presidential candidate, who could run against Purvanov in the upcoming elections, was Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) leader Ivan Kostov, Borissov said.

DSB suggested Constitutional Court judge Nedelcho Beronov as the single rightist presidential nominee. Right wing formations have been carrying out talks concerning the unification of the rightist electorate for a long time, Focus news agency reported.

On July 26 Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) leader Petar Stoyanov decided to withdraw his nomination and support Beronov.

Stoyanov said that no rightist formation expressed clearly its support for his nomination. UDF would support Beronov in order to carry out a strong campaign and finally get the right wing united, said Stoyanov.
