Sofia's mayor Boiko Borissov received President of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Gian Franco Kasper, Focus News Agency said on December 14.
“Sofia's closeness to the mountain is unique,” Kasper said. It is the only capital just 30 minutes away from a high mountain and you should use this closeness, he advised Borissov.
According to Kasper the first to be drawn in were families and children, who should get used to playing in the mountain snow. He said the chance to be able to ski only 30 minutes away from the city centre was unique and that the ski installations were not very expensive, but had to be modernised, Focus news agency said.
Borissov promised to help the ski sport but said that for the time being he was only requested to keep the road to Vitosha in good condition.
Sofia's mayor agreed that Vitosha's closeness was a big natural asset and said skiing should be made accessible to Sofia residents, while the big competitions should be held at the high winter resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo.
However, he added that Sofia would run again to be host of big winter competitions, Focus news agency said.
