15:48 Fri 18 Jan 2008 - Spasena Baramova

On January 18 Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov met his Moscow colleague Yury Luzhkov in Sofia.

Quite a lot had been achieved in the Sofia-Moscow cooperation so far, but with the current visit of president Putin to Bulgaria a number of new opportunities were presented, Luzhkov said after the meeting. He said that different initiatives for the development of the economic and cultural relations between the two cities had been discussed at the meeting, Focus news agency said.

The two mayors also decided that in May 2008, the Days of Moscow would be held in Sofia. It was expected that the Moscow mayor would visit Bulgaria's capital. During the Days of Moscow, apart from culture events, economic forums would be held as well.

Borissov and Luzhkov agreed to continue cooperation and increase contacts in construction, Focus news agency said. Luzhkov said that Bulgarian companies, Glavbolgarstroy in particular, had managed to retain their positions on the Russian market and were doing a good job in Moscow.

Moscow's mayor said Russia had an interest to develop cultural tourism and children's travel. Borissov said that Vitosha nature park could be developed in that direction and Russian children could spend their holidays in Sofia.

Boiko Borissov said after the meeting that Sofia-Moscow relations were not subject to politics, but focused on achieving gains for both sides. He said Luzhkov assured him that Moscow would support Sofia in its attempts to solve the traffic problem.
