Over 11 000 stray dogs roam the streets of Sofia, mayor Boyko Borissov and chairman of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Ivan Yuhnovski said.
They cited a stray dog census conducted through questionnaires completed by NGO representatives.
Yuhnovski said that “the census helps us solve the problem in a humane and European way.”
According to Borissov spaying and neutering was the only humane and European way to reduce the number of stray dogs in the city.
Sofia municipal company Ekoravnovesie caught and treated 3862 dogs over the past 10 months, Focus news agency said.
The company director Miroslav Naidenov said that the number of the euthanised dogs was 852. The final measure was implemented in cases of ill or ill-natured dogs.
The population of stray dogs decreased by 10 000 over the ten month period, he said.
