Sofia downtown closed down for opposition march
21:07 Wed 20 Feb 2008 - Petar Kostadinov

Sofia's city hall announced the traffic restrictions for several of the city's major boulevards, caused by the planned protest rally of Bulgarian opposition parties on February 21 2008.

All vehicles would be banned from parking on Dondoukov Boulevard between intersections with Rakovski Street and Chavdar bridge, as well as the northern side of Alexander Nevski Square and Narodno Subranie Square, at any time between 7am and 10pm.

Protesters would gather at the National Place of Culture (NDK) starting noon, and would move out towards Parliament at 1pm using the following route - Vitosha Boulevard, Patriarh Evtimii Boulevard, Rakovski Street, Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard and Narodno Subranie Square.

To accommodate their march, all traffic would be stopped on the respective streets, with the exception of the Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, where vehicles would be merely banned from stopping or parking, starting from 12.45pm until the participants in the rally finish gathering in the Narodno Subranie Square at 2pm.

The rally was scheduled to last until 10pm, when all traffic restrictions would be lifted. Opposition parties expected at least 10 000 people to turn out at the protest march and rally, rising up to double that number.
